Integrity vs. Despair: Identifying Depression in Older Clients- 4.5 CEs August 22, 2026
$60.00
Course Description
As the global population ages, mental health professionals are increasingly called upon to support older adults navigating the profound psychological landscape of Erik Erikson’s final developmental stage: Integrity vs. Despair. While late-life transitions naturally prompt deep reflection, chronic sadness and loss of interest are not a normal part of aging. Unfortunately, late-life depression is frequently underdiagnosed, overlooked, or misattributed to physical illness, cognitive decline, or the aging process itself.
This vital, clinically grounded training equips practitioners with the specialized insights needed to accurately identify and differentiate depression in older clients. Together, we will examine the unique clinical presentations, biological vulnerabilities, and social risk factors—such as isolation and grief—that impact this population. By learning to look beyond traditional diagnostic checklists, you will gain the confidence to recognize subtle somatic symptoms, ensure accurate diagnoses, and help your older clients move through despair toward a meaningful sense of peace, wholeness, and integrity.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this training, you will be able to:
• Understand Late-Life Presentation: Clearly define late-life depression and recognize how its clinical features differ from depression in younger populations.
• Spot Subtle Signs: Identify the unique, often masked behavioral and physical warning signs of depression in aging clients.
• Assess Biological & Social Risks: Analyze the intertwined social and biological risk factors—from physiological changes to profound life transitions—that increase vulnerability in later life.
• Ensure Diagnostic Accuracy: Master differentiation strategies to confidently separate depression from cognitive decline or normal grief, ensuring your clients get the precise care they deserve.
